HAMMOND, La. – Six runs apiece in the first and fourth innings behind five home runs on the game, helped Lamar University to the 18-6 win over the University of the Incarnate Word on Friday morning, ending UIW's season at the Southland Conference Tournament.
Lamar's bats were hot to start the game, leading off with a double to right field. LU followed with an RBI double to left center to take the 1-0 lead. An error by UIW's pitching staff gave Lamar the chance to run home and extend the lead to two. With two outs in the inning, Lamar then hit an RBI double to right field, followed by another RBI double that dropped right inside the left field line (4-0). The Lamar Cardinals closed out the inning with a homer to left field and a 6-0 early advantage.
LU brought in two more runners in the second with a home run over the left-center wall, bringing the score to 8-0.
Lamar's Orsak slammed his second homer of the game to left field in the top of the fourth, plating two, and the Cardinals kept the momentum going with a long shot to center field out of the park for the 11-0 edge. A third homer, this time bringing three runners across home, totaled six runs in the inning off home runs alone (14-0).
A two-RBI homer from
Matt Marlow in the bottom of the fourth put UIW on the board (14-2).
Lamar added four more runs in the sixth and UIW added four in the seventh. Back-to-back RBI singles from
Jamey Richey and
Grant Randall brought the score to 18-4 before
Sam Tormos nailed a homer to left field for a final score of 18-6.
