Baseball Wins Final Regular Season Game to Clinch Final Spot in the Conference Tournament

BEAUMONT, TEXAS - The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team won its final game of the regular season against Houston Christian University (HCU) 14-4 to send them to the Southland Conference Tournament (SLC).      

Game 1: UIW 3, HCU 5 

The Cardinals got on the board first, scoring two in the top of the first. Dalton Beck scored on an error, and Grant Randall singled in a run to extend the lead to 2-0. Later in the inning, HCU recorded two RBI doubles to tie the game at 2-2. 

Beck set a single-season record with his 17th homer of the season in the second to give UIW a 3-2 advantage.   

The Huskies plated three runs in the eighth to bring the final score to 5-3. 

Game 2: UIW 14, HCU 4 

UIW struck first, scoring on an RBI single from Daniel Calabrese to bring the score to 1-0 in the first.  

With the bases loaded, Beck went the other way for his 18th homer of the season to put UIW up 5-0 in the second. 

HCU got on the board in the fourth on an RBI single to bring the score to 5-1. 

The Cardinals extended its lead in the fifth, scoring two runs to go up 7-1. 

A sacrifice fly and a solo homer in the sixth allowed the Huskies to pull within four, 7-3.  

HCU added a run in the seventh to bring the score to 7-4.   

The Cardinal offense poured it on in the eighth, scoring seven runs to bring the score to 14-4. Cameron Caley got the scoring started with an RBI single to right. Rey Mendoza drew a bases-loaded walk to drive in another. Calabrese doubled up the middle to drive in two. Tyler Cowan stepped up to the plate and drove in the Cardinals' fifth run of the inning on a fielder's choice. Calabrese scored on a wild pitch, and Ryder Hernandez singled up the middle to round out the scoring for UIW. 

Adam Byrd shut the door on the Huskies in the eighth to send the Cardinals to the SLC Tournament. 

UIW will face Lamar, the No. 1 seed, on Wednesday, May 22. First pitch is set for noon.
