HOUSTON – Dalton Beck sent five Cardinals across the plate off a pair of home runs on Tuesday afternoon to lead the University of the Incarnate Word to an 11-5 victory at Rice University.
 
UIW saw two big hitters – Rey Mendoza and Tyler Cowan – back in the lineup. The duo combined for five RBIs on the day as the Cardinals put up an impressive 12 hits against the Owls.
 
The Cardinals and Owls were knotted at zero through the first two innings until Rice put up four runs in the third to take the lead.
 
Cameron Caley was walked by the Rice pitching staff, advanced to second on a ground out, and then third on a passed ball. This set up Beck for a two-RBI homer out to left field to quickly cut the deficit. JD Gregson singled to left center and Tony DeJesus was hit to take first. A Daniel Calabrese single loaded the bases for Cowan to smack a two-RBI single to left field, tying the score up at 4-4.
 
UIW added three runs in the fifth and sixth, while Rice sent one across the plate to bring the score to 7-5.
 
A pair of back-to-back doubles from Ryan Scott and Mendoza in the eighth extended the Cardinals' lead before Beck saw his second homer of the night to left field to take a commanding 11-5 edge to win the game.
 
The Cardinals head to Southern University for a Wednesday night matchup at 6 p.m.
