SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team scored nine runs in the final four innings; however, the comeback fell short, losing the series finale to Texas A&M Corpus Christi (TAMCC), 14-12, on Sunday afternoon at Sullivan Field, sponsored by H-E-B.
The Cardinals were down as much as 11, but the team showed its resilience when it mattered most. Entering the sixth down 14-3 the Cardinals began to mount a comeback. Rob Liddington Jr. and JD Gregson both crushed solo shots to left to bring the score to 14-5. Later in the inning, Daniel Calabrese scored on a fielder's choice to cut the deficit to 14-6 entering the seventh.
Ryan Scott extended his hitting streak to 11 games with a two-run blast in the seventh. Calabrese recorded an RBI single later in the inning to bring the score to 14-9.
UIW would score two runs in the eighth to pull within three, 14-11.
After a Cameron Caley RBI single, the Cardinals were down 14-12 with two men on and two out. Dalton Beck, who finished the game 3-6 was called out on a bang-bang play at first to end the game.
Larry Westall pitched four shutout innings, allowing one hit while striking out three in relief.
UIW is on the road Tuesday, March 26 as they take on Tarleton State. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
