Women’s Basketball Hosts Lamar before Traveling to HCU

SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team splits this week at home and on the road. The Cardinals host Lamar University for a 6:30 p.m. tip at the McDermott Center on Thursday. UIW then turns around and travels to Houston Christian University on Saturday. This week marks the second half of the conference season, as the Cardinals are set to rematch all nine SLC opponents.

UIW
  • The Cardinals have climbed into fourth place in the current Southland Conference standings behind Southeastern Louisiana, Lamar, and Texas A&M – Corpus Christi. In the last four games, the Cardinals' only loss came in triple overtime at SLU.
  • Aliyah Collins is coming off the bench to lead the Cardinals in scoring with 12.9 points per game. Nina De Leon Negron is the second-leading scorer with 10.5 points and 6.5 rebounds per contest. She adds 67 assists and 31 steals so far this season.
  • Destiny Terrell is the leading rebounder with almost seven per game and 43 offensive boards for the season. She adds nine points per game for the Cardinals.
  • UIW and Lamar sit at the top of the conference for team offensive rebounds, both pulling down 13 a game.

LAMAR
  • Lamar is on a four-game win streak, with the only Southland Conference loss coming against Texas A&M – Commerce in mid-January.
  • UIW faced Lamar at the start of the year, coming out of the tunnel strong to take the lead in the first half and only trailing two heading in the fourth quarter. A scoring drought in the fourth shifted momentum to Lamar who took the game, 70-53.
  • Akasha Davis has been a force for Lamar, notching her seventh straight double-double. She leads the conference in scoring with 15.9 points per game and in rebounds with 10.5 per contest.
  • The last time the two Cardinals met, Sabrina Dean put up 29 points on the game. She averages 14.5 points and 5.3 rebounds per contest.

HCU
  • The Huskies are on a 10-game losing streak and have not been able to pick up a win in Southland Conference play. HCU suffered three two-point losses against Northwestern State, Southeastern Louisiana, and Nicholls, proving they are hungry for a win and come to compete.
  • At the end of January, just three games ago, the Cardinals defeated the Huskies 77-49 at the McDermott Center. UIW shot nearly 50 percent from the field with 35 bench points in the balanced scoring effort.
  • N'Denasija Collins (14.4) and Kennedy Wilson (10.8) lead the Huskies in scoring, both averaging double-digits. Collins is also the leading rebounder with 7.6 per contest.
  • The Huskies are No. 1 in the conference for blocked shots, disrupting four per game. Four different HCU student-athletes have 10-plus blocks on the season.
