Women’s Basketball Rallies Late to Take Down Demons

SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team won it's third game in a row, taking down the Northwestern State Demons, 53-45, on Saturday afternoon at the McDermott Center.

Nina De Leon Negron recorded a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds, her fifth of the season and third in a row. Aliyah Collins and Destiny Terrell were the other two Cardinals in double-figures, both adding 11 apiece.

The first quarter was a stale mate as both teams knocked down five shots from the field and were tied at 11. The second quarter proved to be low scoring on both sides once more as the Demons barely edged out the Cardinals 10-9 and went into the break, up one at 21-20.

Northwestern State picked up the pace of the game in the third quarter, outscoring the Cardinals 14-9, the highest scoring quarter thus far to give the Demons a 35-29 lead heading into the final ten minutes.

The Cardinals offense exploded in the fourth behind De Leon Negron's nine points and 50 percent shooting from the field and from three. As a team, UIW converted on 62 percent from the field and outscored the Demons 24-10 to secure the 53-45 win.
