TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word track and field team competed all across Texas this weekend, in the final meets before Southland Conference Indoor Championships. Some of the throwers were in Houston at the Howie Ryan Invitational and the rest of the team was in Lubbock for the Jarvis Scott Open.
 
Christian Gomez's 14.91-meter and Alex Brown's 14-meter throws moved in the tenth and eleventh spots respectively in the Southland Conference this season. The pair also made moves up the rankings in the weight throw. Gomez 17.05-meter throw got him up to sixth in the SLC and Brown's 16.15-meter throw helped him crack the top-10 as he is now tenth in the conference. On the women's side of things McCartney McAlexander 12.87 meters to move to seventh and Jordan Gulbronson 11.56 meter to move to tenth. Gulbronson also made it to the top-10, and is now eighth, after a 14.78-meter weight throw.
 
More than 500 miles away in Lubbock Texas the rest of the Cardinals showed up and showed out for the annual Jarvis Scott Open. UIW had a total of 22 performances that landed in the top-10 of the Southland Conference, 10 of which were top-5.
 
The distance runners led the charge with many top finishes. Jared Laverty took tenth in the 800 meters crossing the line at 1:54.99. Griffin Neal was seventh in the Mile with a time of 4:12.08 and Bryan Mileski was ninth with a time of 4:15.58. Eric Pineda (8:45.39) and Ryan Garza (8:46.98) finished about one second apart in the 3,000 to take seventh and ninth. Ashlyn Royal took fourth in that same event with a time of 10:03.57. To cap things off Damon Gutierrez was fourth in the 5,000 meters with 15.20.20.
 
In the field events Abbigail Morrow had a 1.67-meter-high jump to place ninth and Garret Stokes was eighth in the weight throw with a mark of 17.95 meters.
