HOUSTON – Head Coach
Jeff Dow emphasized to his team Thursday night that more people needed to step up, instead of relying on one or two scorers. The Cardinals took that advice on Saturday afternoon at Houston Christian University with 11 student-athletes contributing to the 67-40 victory.
Littering the stat sheet, UIW finished a productive team outing with only four turnovers. The Cardinals held HCU to 18.5 percent shooting from the field on the game while leading the entire 40 minutes.
Chloe Storer and
Jorja Elliott finished with 14 points apiece. Senior,
Destiny Terrell added nine rebounds to join the 500-plus career rebounds club.
The Cardinals' lock-down defense was highlighted all game, holding the Huskies to zero made field goals and only six points from the free throw line in the first. Offensively, Storer got UIW started with six early points to help in the 11-0 start and the 20-6 first-quarter score.
It wasn't until 6:05 left in the second quarter when HCU nailed its first field goal on a 3-pointer to bring the score to 27-11. The Cardinal offense ran smooth, finding the shooters for an extra pass and setting up Elliott for her third made 3-pointer of the half. The Huskies struggled to score amid an ever-changing Cardinal defense, committing two shot clock violations in the first half. UIW held a 35-18 lead over HCU heading into the third quarter.
The Huskies scored only four points in the third quarter, shooting seven percent from the field on 1-for-14 shooting. HCU had it's largest scoring quarter in the fourth, but could not cut the deficit. UIW's bench saw valuable minutes in the fourth with 28 total bench points on the game.
