Football Continues Homestand with PVAMU this Saturday

SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word football team looks to continue its home streak at Gayle and Tom Benson Stadium on Saturday Oct. 5. The Cardinals are 2-2 this season, with both wins coming at home against Northern Colorado and Northern Arizona. The Cardinals and Panthers are set to face off at 6 p.m. during UIW's Red Out Game, sponsored by Raising Cane's.

UIW
  • Coming of a bye week, UIW remains at No. 15 in the Stats Perform Top 25 and has moved up to No. 15 in the AFCA Coaches Poll.
  • The Cardinals are tenth in the FCS in passing offense, averaging 275.5 yards per game. They have the best passing offense in the Southland Conference and the second-best offensive efficiency (147.4).
  • UIW's defense has the most sacks (10) and fumbles forced (6) in the league.
PANTHERS
  • PVAMU is 2-3 on the season thus far, including three conference opponents for a 1-2 SWAC record.
  • The defending SWAC West Division Champions were picked to finish second in their respective region.
  • The Panthers wins have come from a 37-31 victory over Southland Conference foe Northwestern State and most recently, a 36-34 overtime win over Grambling State last weekend.
  • In what is now known as the longest FCS game in history, the Panthers battled the Tigers through five overtimes, earning themselves HBCU FCS National Team of the Week.
THE LAST TIME THEY MET
  • The Cardinals hold a 2-1 series lead over the Panthers, winning the last two games.
  • UIW and PVAMU last met on September 17, 2022 where the Cardinals won, 31-14.
PLAYERS TO WATCH
  • Zach Calzada remains in the top 10 in the FCS for passing yards with his 1,102 yards so far this season. His 10 passing TD's is good for sixth in the nation.
  • Jalen Walthall is tied for second in the FCS for his five receiving touchdowns and is tenth for receiving yards with 399 on the season. He's averaging 99.8 yards per game.
  • Roy Alexander is thirteenth in FCS for receiving yards with 385 and has 96.2 yards per game. He's fourth in the FCS in receptions per game with 7.5. Walthall and Alexander lead the Southland Conference.
  • Dekalon Taylor is fourth in the SLC for rushing yards, averaging 77.3 yards per game. He's tallied four touchdowns this season.
  • Safety Mason Chambers leads the Cardinals in tackles and is fifth in the Southland Conference with 33 total tackles to average 8.3 per game.
