SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word football team is set for a rematch against Nicholls State University on Saturday, Oct. 12 at Gayle and Tom Benson Stadium. The Family Night/Pink Out Game, sponsored by North Park Chevrolet is set to kickoff at 6 p.m.
UIW
- Following last week's 56-28 victory over Prairie View A&M, the Cardinals remained at No. 15 in the Stats Perform Top 25 and in the AFCA Coaches Poll.
- Stats Perform named the Cardinals vs. Colonels matchup the FCS Game of the Week as much anticipation has been building for potentially an early battle for the SLC trophy.
- Under the leadership of Zach Calzada, the Cardinals are averaging 438.4 yards of total offense per game which is good for the 12th best total offense in the FCS.
- UIW is No. 14 in FCS for its 174 total points they've put up on opponents this year, to average 34.8 per contest.
- Defensively, the Cardinals are holding opponents to only six red zone scores through 14 attempts. This puts UIW second in the FCS for red zone defense.
COLONELS
- Nicholls is 2-3 overall, coming off a 51-7 win over Southern last Saturday. The Colonels three losses have come from No. 11 Sacramento State, No. 18 LSU and Louisiana Tech.
- Cornerback Laurence Sullivan Jr. was named SLC Defensive Player of the Week after an impressive two-interception performance at Southern.
- Elli Ennis is the Colonels' leading tackler with 44 total tackles to go along with one interception, one pass breakup, two QBHs, two fumble recoveries, one forced fumble and one blocked kick.
- Collin Guggenheim has rushed for almost 500 yards through five games, averaging 91.20 yards per game and five yards per carry.
- Quarterback Pat McQuaide is 69-11-0 for 774 yards in the air this season with seven touchdowns, averaging 154.80 passing yards per game.
- Quincy Brown leads the receiving core with three touchdowns and 56.40 yards per game for 282 total yards.
THE LAST TIME THEY MET
- UIW holds a 19-1 record at Gayle and Tom Benson Stadium since 2021 with the sole loss coming against Nicholls last season. This 2023 loss was also a key factor in the Cardinals losing the Southland Conference Champion race.
- The Cardinals held a 10-0 lead to end the first, but the Colonels put up 45 points through the final three quarters to take the game, 45-32.
- Nicholls holds a narrow all-time series lead, 6-5. The Cardinals are 2-3 against the Colonels at home.
PLAYERS TO WATCH
- Zach Calzada has racked up 1,393 yards through the air this season which is sixth most in the FCS.
- Jalen Walthall's seven touchdown receptions and 113.8 receiving yards per game is not only the best in the SLC, but also, third in the FCS.
- Roy Alexander found himself in the end zone for the second game in a row and is not too far behind his teammate Walthall, currently with the fourth most receiving yards per game in the Southland Conference.
- Dune Smith was setting the Prairie View offense behind the sticks, snagging two sacks and three tackles for loss for a total of 23 yards.
- Mason Chambers leads the Cardinals in tackles this season with 34 total, 18 solo and 16 assists.
