SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word men's basketball team fell in the first Southland Conference game of the season against Texas A&M Corpus Christi, 65-75, on Saturday night.
Coming out of the gates each team went to what they did best.
Sky Wicks and
Josiah Hammons led the way for the Cardinals in scoring each with six points in the first 10 minutes of the game. TAMU-CC was able to match their scoring by getting several second chance buckets and out rebounding the Cardinals 11-6. The score was 19-17 in favor of the Islanders halfway through the first half.
The remainder of the half went Corpus Christi's way as they forced a total of 13 turnovers and went into the break up 38-29.
The Islanders came out of the locker room shooting nearly 60 percent from the field and going up by as many as 19 in the second half, 66-47. Despite getting down big, UIW didn't give up and the Cards were able to cut the lead to single digits late in the game. However, capitalizing on their efficient shots and points from turnovers TAMU-CC was able to hold on the for the win.
