Women's Basketball Falls in Tight Match against Nicholls

SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team fell in a tight match on Thursday night with a 65-59 loss to Nicholls State University.

Aliyah Collins continues to lead the Cardinals in scoring, putting up 14 points on the night, going 3-for-4 for 3-pointers. Nina De Leon Negron neared a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds.

Myra Bell started the game with five quick points off back-to-back offensive rebounds and putbacks, the first, through contact. The Colonels surged, ending the first quarter with an eight-point advantage (22-14).

The Cardinals made a run for the lead to close out the first half. A layup from De Leon Negron brought UIW within two before Breelyn Sanborn drained a three to cut it down to one, 27-26, with two minutes to go. Nicholls continued to come with answers and De Leon Negron finished a floater as the clock expired to stay within one (29-28).

Nicholls pushed its lead to 10 in the third, but UIW stayed within reach and headed into the fourth quarter, trailing by eight points (48-40). In the final three minutes of the game, the Cardinals found themselves within one once more at 53-52, but Colonel 3-pointer held off UIW and Nicholls narrowly walked away with a 65-59 victory.
