Women’s Basketball Hits the Road to TAMUC and NSU

  • The Cardinals are 0-2 to start Southland Conference play, facing the top two opponents in the league during week one. They narrowly lost to Texas A&M – Corpus Christi (61-63) last Saturday to hold a 7-6 overall record.
  • UIW's game-altering defense continues to keep the Cardinals competitive, allowing opponents only 55 points per game putting them at No. 33 in the nation for scoring defense and first in the SLC, tied with Texas A&M – Corpus Christi.
  • On the boards, UIW allows 34.6 opponent rebounds for the second-best in the conference and the Cardinals are first in offensive rebounds with 13.8 per contest.
  • Destiny Terrell leads the rebounding charge with 7.2 per game, marking her the third-best rebounder in the conference.
  • Floor leader Nina De Leon Negron is second in the conference for assists and steals while averaging 34 minutes per game.
  • Aliyah Collins returns from injury, earning valuable minutes and leading the team in scoring with 11.7 points per contest.
 
TEXAS A&M – COMMERCE
  • The Lions are 1-1 to start SLC play, falling to New Orleans by 10 and defeating McNeese by nine.
  • TAMUC puts up the most points per game in the league at around 70 points per contest, while shooting 34 percent from 3-point land with 7.8 3-pointers per game, the best in the conference.
  • They attack the defensive boards hard, leading the SLC with 29 defensive rebounds per game.
  • The Lions have four student-athletes – Mia Deck, Mary Delgado, Jordyn Newsome, and Ahmya Boyce – scoring double digits.
 
NORTHWESTERN STATE
  • The Demons also fell to Lamar University (56-73) after defeating McNeese 78-54. The team is set to face Houston Christian on Thursday, before seeing the Cardinals on Saturday.
  • NSU does not stand out in the conference standings but has a solid squad that started conference play 1-1.
  • Jiselle Woodson (12.1) and Sharna Ayres (10.6) lead the team in scoring with Woodson tallying 41 assists on the season and 17 steals.
