SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word men's soccer team got back into the win column after taking down the Gonzaga Bulldogs by a score of 4-2 on Sunday afternoon. This is the first time the Cardinals have scored four goals in a single game since 2016.
The Cardinals started the scoring off in the 19
th minute.
Timothy Ospina, who was on his first game back from yellow card suspension, took a free kick from right outside of the box and put it in the back of the net to give UIW a 1-0 lead.
In the 35
th minute of the game the Cardinals were called for a handball inside of the box, giving the Bulldogs a penalty kick, which they converted to tie the game.
Late in the first half
Will Ansah took a shot down field to
Erick Rios. The ball was nearly out of bound but Rios found a way to put the ball into play right in front of goal allowing Willy Aguilar to score and give the Cardinals a 2-1 lead headed into the break.
15 minutes into the second half Gonzaga was able to score the equalizer. Soon after the Bulldogs had a corner kick and looked to take their first lead of the game.
Hugo Constant snatched the ball out of the air and pushed it down the field. Even though UIW didn't score on that counterattack, the Cards remained aggressive. When the ball was pushed wide to Paco Segura, he made a move back inside and found
Sello Diphoko who gave UIW back the lead 3-2.
In the 88
th minute Peleg Armendraiz scored to seal the game for the Cardinals 4-2.
