SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word football team beat the North American University Stallions 63-3 in the home opener Saturday night. In Head Coach
Clint Killough's first win at Gayle and Tom Benson Stadium, the Cardinals extended the home streak to 13-0.
The Cardinals started the scoring early. After the defense forced a three-and-out on the first series of the game,
Zach Calzada found
CJ Hardy for a 31-yard touchdown less than three minutes into the game.
Not one minute later, the Cardinals scored again on a pick-six from
Ronald Wilson to put UIW up 14-0. UIW went on to score two more times in the quarter, first on a two-yard rush by Calzada, and later a rush up the middle by
Timothy Carter. The Cards finished the first up, 28-0.
In the second quarter, Calzada found Hardy once again for his third touchdown of the game and
Jarrell Wiley scored a 14-yard touchdown to give UIW a 42-0 lead going into the half.
The second half started just like the first. The Cardinals scored on their first offensive drive of the quarter, on a touchdown pass from
Richard Torres to
Dekalon Taylor, and followed it up with a pick-six from
Kendrick Stone, pushing the Cardinal lead to 56-0.
UIW's defense continued to hold strong not allowing the Stallions to cross the 50-yard line until the end of the third quarter when the Cards muffed a punt on the 19 yard-line. NAU was able to finish off the drive with a field goal making the score 56-3.
The Cardinals responded with a 12-play 70-yard drive to score their final touchdown of the game. UIW finished the night with over 530 total yards, only giving up 12 to North American to take the win by a final score of 63-3. Both the third quarter (12 minutes) and the fourth (10 minutes) were shortened.
