Football Returns to the Nest

SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word football team will take on North American University in their home opener this weekend on Saturday, September 23 at 6:00 p.m. CT. This is the Cardinals annual red out game and the first 300 fans will receive a free T-shirt.

UIW  

  • The Cardinals moved up one spot to No. 9 in the FCS Stats Perform Poll and stayed at nine in the FCS Coaches Poll for the second week in a row. UIW sits atop the Southland Conference standings with a 2-1 overall record and was the only team to bring home a win in week three.  

  • UIW looks to extend its 12-0 win streak at Gayle and Tom Benson Stadium. The Cardinals have held it down at home since a home-opener win against Prairie View A&M University on September 11, 2021.  

  • With 481.0 yards per game, the Cardinals are fourth in FCS for total offense.  

SCOUTING THE STALLIONS  

  • Jesper Korkalai is one of six players to take snaps for NAU, he is the leading man for the Stallions averaging 166 passing yards per game this season. 

  • Spencer Smith has racked up a team-leading 10 tackles this season from the free safety position. 

 
LAST TIME THEY MET  

  • The Cardinals and Stallions have never met as this is North American University's second year fielding a team.  

PLAYERS TO WATCH  

  • Brandon Porter was named Southland Conference Offensive Player of the Week and was awarded FCS Offensive Player of the Week honorable mention after going for 201 yards and one touchdown against ACU. On the season, he leads the FCS in receiving yards with 376 total.  

  • Tre Richardson earned Southland Conference Defensive Player of the Week after making eight tackles, seven of which were solo, and one interception, his second week in a row with an interception. He's tied for first in the SLC in interceptions.  

  • Zach Calzada led the Cardinals in rushing last week racking up 87 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. He also added 373 yards through the air bringing his total to an FCS-leading 1,000 yards on the season. 

  • The Cardinals have four wide receivers in the top 10 of the Southland Conference for receiving yards per game. Porter leads the way with 125.3 per game, Caleb Chapman follows with 70.0, Jaelin Campbell adds 60.3, and Marquez Perez averages 43.3. 

  • Defensive lineman, Steven Parker has tallied 7.5 tackles for loss, two forced fumbles, and 3.5 sacks this season to lead the conference in each category.
