Women’s Basketball Falls Short against Lamar

SAN ANTONIO – In a game with seven lead changes and four ties, the University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team came up short, 74-67, against Lamar University on Thursday night at the McDermott Center.

Nina De Leon Negron (18), Brenna Perez (16), and Breelyn Sanborn (12) accounted for 46 of UIW's 67 points on the night. De Leon Negron and Chloe Storer added five assists apiece, while Jorja Elliott lead the team in rebounds with six.

UIW stunned Lamar, shooting 100 percent (5-for-5) from the field to start the game behind two 3-pointers from Elliott to give the Cardinals a 13-2 advantage. The Lamar Cardinals then went on a 9-1 run to chip away at the lead and bring the score to 17-14 to end the quarter.

Sanborn went 3-for-3 from three-point land in the second quarter as UIW fought to ward off Lamar. LU opened the quarter with a 3-pointer to tie the game at 17 before De Leon Negron finished a layup to even the score (19-19). Sanborn drained her second three of the quarter to hand UIW a 25-22 lead. The Cardinals traded baskets for the remainder of the quarter as Lamar came out on top, 34-33.

The third proved to be another battle between the Cardinals. UIW jumped to a 51-44 lead at the five-minute mark as De Leon Negron drained another 3-pointer, the largest lead since opening the game 13-2. Lamar was then fouled beyond the arc and went to the line sinking all three (51-47). LU turned it into a one-point game with a minute left in the quarter (55-54), but Aliyah Collins hit a pull-up jumper to extend UIW's lead to three (57-54).

Lamar took a 61-60 lead with just under eight minutes left in the game. UIW hung around, staying within five points until the end as LU ultimately won, 74-67.
