Women’s Basketball Hosts Last Home Games of the Season

SAN ANTONIO – With only three games left in the regular season, the University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team will host two this week at the McDermott center in Northwestern State on Thursday and Texas A&M – Commerce on Saturday. The Cardinals are currently tied for fifth place with the Demons in the latest standings, while the top eight will advance to the Southland Conference Tournament.
 
THE LAST TIME THEY MET
  • The Cardinals and Demons have not yet met this season, however, UIW leads the series history 7-4, winning the last four matchups.
  • UIW fell, 64-61, against the Lions earlier this season on Dec. 31, 2022, at Commerce.
 
UIW
  • The Cardinals have won three straight games and four of their last five to move up the conference standings to fifth place when it matters most.
  • UIW's defense continues to hold its opponents to just 57.8 points per game.
  • Point guard, Nina De Leon Negron is averaging 11.8 points per contest, while adding 86 assists and 53 steals on the season.
  • Freshman, Jorja Elliott has played a big role for the Cardinals during their three-game win streak, averaging 16 points per game.
 
DEMONS
  • Northwestern State is 11-14 overall and 7-8 in SLC play. The Demons and Cardinals are tied for fifth place in the current conference standings.
  • Candice Parramore is putting up 13.2 points per game to lead the team.
  • The Demons picked up a crucial 82-81 overtime win over New Orleans this past Saturday where Parramore lifted the team to victory with 26 points and six rebounds, shooting 11-for-14 from the free throw line.
 
LIONS
  • Texas A&M – Commerce is 12-15 overall and 10-5 in the conference as the team is tied for third place in the standings.
  • Last week, the Lions fell to Southeastern Louisiana (66-55) and defeated Nicholls (77-70).
  • Dyani Robinson continues to lead the Lions with 17.4 points per contest. Laila Lawrence is the second leading scorer, averaging 11.7 a game while leading the team in rebounds with 7.1 per contest.
