Softball’s Late Surge not enough to Beat Roadrunners

SAN ANTONIO- The University of the Incarnate Word softball team loss to UTSA by a score of 6-5 on Tuesday night. The game took place under very windy conditions where both teams struggled to find their offensive groove.  

The Cardinals got their start in the second inning as Victoria Altamirano shot her third double into left field and advanced Ryleigh Mata over to third. Unfortunately, UIW left both on base but found their stride as Aaliyah Garcia struck out the Roadrunners one by one. By the end of the third, Garcia had tallied up a total of four strikeouts and ended the game with six.  

In the fourth the Cardinals were rolling. Mata walked to first as Altamirano again stepped up to the plate. With a single and an error on the first baseman, the freshman ran to second as Mata ran in for the first score of the game. Just when UTSA thought they had UIW, Kendall McGary slashed a ball over the left side of the fence for her first home run of the season. The Cardinals held the lead by three as they headed into the bottom of the fourth. UTSA scored two runs to make it a one run game.  

Down by two at the top of the seventh UIW had their backs against a wall. Giselle Villarreal dropped a ball right into center field to land herself at first base. Because of a fielder's choice Villarreal ran to second just as it was Baylee Lemons turn at the plate. Lemons' slammed a home run deep into left field to bring the game tying run in as it was 5-5.  

Madison Floyd stepped up to the circle and delivered two perfect strikeouts, but the Roadrunners just got the best of the game as they won with a final score of 6-5.  

Now, the Cardinals will get a small break until their next game. At home, they'll host Prairie View A&M for a double header with the first game starting at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, February 25.
