SAN ANTONIO- The University of the Incarnate Word softball team got the best of Prairie View A&M in the doubleheader that took place Saturday afternoon. After winning the first game by a score of 6-4 the Cardinals were on fire from the offensive end. In the second game of the series UIW was still too much power for the Panthers and won 4-1.
Game 1: UIW vs PVAMU, 6-4
The first game was a toss-up between the two battling teams. UIW started off steaming as they scored three runs in the first two innings, but PVAMU answered back to score four runs in in the top of the third.
In the bottom of the third, UIW came to the plate with a big response. With two runners on base, Kendall McGary slammed a single and brough home Victoria Altamirano. An error on the Panthers defense advanced McGary to second and Ryleigh Mata to third. Madison Guillen stepped up for the Cardinals and doubled over to center field, bringing in both teammates and increasing her RBI's to five on the year.
No scoring came in the last four innings for each of the teams as both defenses were unstoppable. On the Cardinals' end, Maddy Blake and Madison Floyd only allowed four hits combined in the total 16 batters they faced. Floyd was credited for the win with her dominant 2.2 innings pitched in the game. In addition, Floyd now has a total of 20 strikeouts which puts her in the top 10 for Southland Conference standings.
Game 2: UIW vs PVAMU, 4-1
After an intense first game in the doubleheader, the Cardinals beat the Panthers by a score of 4-1 in the second match of the series. Annie Gunther was given the win for UIW after acquiring four strikeouts in the seven innings she pitched. Cailin Massey took the loss for Prairie View.
Unlike the first game, the Cardinals didn't see their first run until the bottom of the second. McGary hit another single to see Mata run home. The first score set the tone for what the rest of the game would look like for both teams.
Prairie view answered back in the third to make the game 1-1, but when it came down to the sixth inning UIW was in complete control.
Bases were loaded three times in the bottom of the sixth for the Cardinals. Lemons, Altamirano, and Mata each scored to bring the lead to three. McGary also earned another RBI during this run to bring her RBI count to four on the day. She also led the Cardinals with three hits in her four at bats.
UIW will be back on the field as they'll face Stephen F. Austin in Nacogdoches for a three-game series starting Friday, March 3.
