Softball Shuts out Omaha, Falls to Loyola Chicago

SAN ANTONIO- The University of the Incarnate Word softball team went 1-1 on its first day at the Texas Classic. The Cardinals shut out the University of Nebraska Omaha 3-0 to hand them their first loss of the season after falling to the University of Loyola Chicago 5-0 in the morning.  

UIW vs Loyola Chicago, 0-5 

In a tough matchup that went to all seven innings, UIW finished with three hits. 

Pitching changes were quick for the Cardinals as we saw three different pitchers in the first inning. After Loyola Chicago found their groove early on, Natalie Myers kept the game at a hold after striking out a batter to close the end of the first.  

On the offensive end UIW struggled to find their momentum until Baylee Lemons stepped up to the plate. Lemons hit a single into right field nabbing the Cardinals their first hit of the day. In looking at UIW's offensive side in addition to Lemons, shortstop Giselle Villarreal finished the day with two hits in her three at bats, leading the team's hitting average.  

Senior Madison Floyd finished out five innings for the Cardinals logging four strikeouts in the 16 batters she faced. Though in her great performance, the Ramblers finished on the winning end of the stick.  

UIW vs Nebraska Omaha, 3-0 

In the second game of the Texas Classic the Cardinals shut out Omaha, 3-0, to grab their third win of the year. Aaliyah Garcia garnered the win for this game pitching all seven innings letting go 111 pitches. Garcia struck out a total of five batters, walked two and only allowed three hits.  

Omaha came into the match on a five-game win streak, but UIW held them all the way to the end. Batting was slow for both teams as the first score didn't come until the top of the fourth.  

Madison Guillen went up to the plate with runners on two bases. Smashing a single through the right-side Guillen picked up two RBIs for UIW to create a 2-0 lead. The next score came in the seventh after Dominique Guerra ran in after an error by Omaha's third baseman. The final was 3-0 making it UIW's first shutout this year.
