Softball Falls in Rematch Against Green Bay

SAN ANTONIO- The University of the Incarnate Word softball team lost 3-2 in the final game of the Cardinal Classic against Green Bay on Sunday afternoon. UIW first saw Green Bay on Friday night where the Cardinals dominated the Phoenix with a 6-1 win.

UIW vs Green Bay

It was a tough day at the field for both the Cardinals and the Phoenix as they closed out the final day of the Cardinal Classic. Going to all seven innings of the game, Green Bay overtook the lead in the top of the seventh to beat UIW by one.

Pitcher, Natalie Myers, took her first start in the circle for the Cardinals. In the two innings pitched she struck out a batter on a total of 46 pitches thrown. Madison Floyd came in at the third inning to pitch the rest of the game. In the five innings pitched, she struck out a total of five batters.

The Cardinals earned their first hit as Avalon Sanchez singled over to second base in the bottom of the second with two outs on the board. Giselle Villarreal got on base with a walk but unfortunately was left on base to end the second.

Down by two heading into the third, the Cardinals' momentum shifted as three of the four batters loaded up the bases to start the inning. Baylee Lemons stepped up to the plate and placed a sacrifice fly right into center field to bring Ryleigh Mata home and put UIW within one run (2-1).

As momentum heightened, the Cardinals' defense forced three up, three down to run into the bottom of the fourth. Dariane Cram stepped up to bat with only one out left to give. After reaching on a fielder's choice and becoming the tying run, Kendall McGary slammed a double down the center bringing Cram home. The score was tied 2-2 for the next two innings.

In a familiar position for both teams, it all came down to the final seventh inning. Green Bay scored on two hits and left one on base to take the lead 3-2 and ultimately win the game.
