Battle of the Cardinals; Football Travels to Lamar

SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word Football team heads into an important two-game stretch, facing off against the two other Southland Conference foes who share the 3-0 undefeated record. This Saturday, the Cardinals head to Beaumont, Texas to face off against Lamar University at 3 p.m.

  • The Cardinals have moved in both major polls, elevating to No. 4 in the AFCA Coaches Poll and dropping to No. 8 in the Stats Perform Top 25 Poll.
  • UIW's 3,317 total yards on the season put the team at No. 6 in the FCS for total offense.
  • Defensively, the Cardinals are holding their opponents to only 282.7 yards per game, the eighth lowest in the FCS. The Cardinal defense is also tied for first in the nation for touchdowns with four on the season.
SCOUTING THE BEAUMONT CARDINALS 
  • Lamar is on a four-game win streak, starting with a 38-0 win over Lincoln University and extending into Southland Conference play with wins over Houston Christian, Northwestern State, and Southeastern Louisiana.
  • The Cardinals saw the largest win with a 27-13 win over the Demons, however, Lamar narrowly defeated both the Huskies (21-19) and the Lions (30-24).
  • Lamar has two rushers with three touchdowns apiece. Khalan Griffin is putting up 71.86 yards on the ground per game, while Major Bowden is averaging 4.1 yards per carry.
  • Quarterback Robert Coleman is throwing for nine touchdowns while averaging 191.29 yards per contest for a 65.85 completion percentage.
  • Foday Jalloh is a defensive threat for Lamar, notching 41 total tackles, 5.5 TFLs with 21 yards, 2.5 sacks, and one QBH.
LAST TIME THEY MET  
  • An impressive 35-point first quarter led UIW to a 56-17 victory over Lamar on October 8, 2022.
  • The UIW defense didn't allow a single first down through the first quarter and the Cardinals led 35-0, setting a school record for most points scored in a quarter.
PLAYERS TO WATCH 
  • Brandon Porter continues to lead the FCS in receiving yards per game with 104.3 for five touchdowns.
  • Steven Parker is second in the nation for tackles for loss with 14 and 90 yards, averaging 2.0 per game. He leads the team in sacks with 6.5, while adding six QBHs and three forced fumbles.
  • Quarterback Zach Calzada is still fourth in the nation for total offense with 310.2 yards per game and third in passing yards per game with 299.50. After missing last week, Richard Torres stepped up throwing 161 yards for three touchdowns in the air and one on the ground to earn FedEx Ground FCS Freshman of the Week honors.
  • Tylan Foster has finished three consecutive games with double-digit tackles and leads the team with 60 total on the season.
