Cardinals Finish Strong Past the Lions

SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word football team won it's third straight home game and second Southland Conference game, against Texas A&M – Commerce, 28-11, on Saturday evening to continue the undefeated home streak and extend the record to 15-0 at Gayle and Tom Benson Stadium.

The Cardinal defense showed up strong for the second week in a row only giving up 11 points and zero touchdowns. Tylan Foster once again led the stout Cardinal defense with 13 total tackles, two tackles for loss, and one interception. Ronald Wilson had two pass breakups and made the game sealing pick six. Steven Parker added two sacks and three tackles for loss for 18 yards, making him the new all-time season and career leader in tackles for loss yards at UIW with 143.

The first half of the game was very different from what the Cardinals are used to. The first three drives resulted in turnovers on downs with an interception by Foster followed by a missed field goal. Commerce finally broke the tie with 6:31 remaining in the quarter on a 35-yard field goal, putting the Lions up 3-0.

UIW gave up one more interception and punted for the first time, setting TAMU-C up at the 13- yard line. On the first play of the drive, the Lions fumbled and UIW was able to capitalize with great on the field position, scoring on a Zach Calzada pass out to Jarrell Wiley (7-3).

The second was more of the same until late in the quarter when Calzada dropped back and threw the ball up to the end zone. CJ Hardy found a way to get back to the ball to make a spectacular catch over the defender a touchdown. The Cardinals went into the locker room with a 14-3 lead.

There was no scoring in the third quarter. On UIW's first possession of the fourth the Lions got their second interception of the game and took it back for a touchdown cutting the lead to five, 14-9. Commerce decided to go for two and make it a three-point game, their try was successful (14-11).

Later in the quarter, the teams traded interceptions. However, Ronald Wilson turned his pick into six, giving the Cardinals a 21-11 lead.

UIW took control of the game after defense came up with a huge fourth-down stop which gave the Cardinals the ball on the 27-yard line. Wiley scored on a 14-yard rush pushing the Cardinal lead to 28-11.
