Men’s Basketball Comes Up Short Against Defending SLC Champs

SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word men's basketball team fell in back-to-back games against Texas A&M – Corpus Christi on Wednesday by a score of 91-61 and on Saturday afternoon, 80-71.

In the first match up, UIW held a 13-12 lead on TAMUCC before the Islanders went on 23-4 run to take an 18-point edge. The run was stopped when Trey Miller hit a 3-pointer and the Cardinals went on to cut the Islander lead to 13 at the half, 39-26.

The Islanders pushed their lead to as much as 32 points in the second half behind 11 points from Isaac Mushila and ultimately took the game by a final score of 91-61.

In the second game of the week, the Cardinals put up a fight against TAMUCC. In his first game as a Cardinal, Luca Barei led the team in points scoring 15 with two blocked shots. Miller had 13 points, while Stephon Payne III and Brandon Swaby each added 12.

The game started similarly to the last with both teams trading runs. The Islanders scored the first four points of the game and the Cardinals responded scoring the next eight, but Corpus Christi went on a 14-0 run putting them up 10 (18-8).

Texas A&M - Corpus Christi was able to hold that lead and push it all the way to 18 points with 8:02 left in the game. Over the last few minutes of the game, the Cardinals began to chip away at the lead with scoring contributions from the team's leading scorers Barei, Miller, Payne and Swaby. With 41 seconds remaining Payne III scored, cutting the Islander lead to five (76-71).
