CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – In a battle against two of the top three Southland Conference defensive teams, the University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team fell 59-51 against Texas A&M University – Corpus Christi on Wednesday night at the Dugan Wellness Center.
Nina De Leon Negron continued to lead the Cardinals with 19 points, six rebounds, four steals, and two assists.
Destiny Terrell and
Brenna Perez each finished with nine points.
The Cardinals got off to a 5-0 start over the Islanders and ended the first quarter up, 9-8. The second quarter proved to be just as low scoring as the first. TAMUCC took its first lead of the game and held on heading into halftime, 23-20.
In the third, the Islanders broke out to a 10-point lead to head into the fourth with a 43-33 edge. The largest lead of the game for TAMUCC came in the final quarter as the Cardinals trailed 49-35. With just over two and a half minutes left in the game, De Leon Negron stepped to the free throw line and sunk both (53-48) before immediately grabbing a steal under UIW's basket and finishing the layup to make it a 3-point game (53-50). The Islanders responded on with a 5-0 run that led to a 59-51 victory.
