HOUSTON – The University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team fell, 71-52, on Thursday night against Houston Christian University.
Nina De Leon Negron (12) and
Aliyah Collins (10) lead the Cardinals in scoring. De Leon Negron was also the leading rebounder on the night with seven to go along with three assists and two steals.
The Huskies started the game off with a hot hand on their home court, going 6-for-6 from the field to end the first quarter up, 19-8.
UIW gained momentum in the second quarter after a 3-pointer from
Breelyn Sanborn (21-13). Against the lengthy Huskies,
Brenna Perez attached the basket, drawing both defenders which left
Chloe Storer open for a long jumper at the top of the key. De Leon Negron then knocked down a three to put the Cardinals within 12 to end the half (37-25).
The Cardinals cut the lead to ten in the first minute of the third quarter (37-27). HCU answered but UIW kept chipping away before De Leon Negron slashed across the lane for a driving layup off the glass that put the Cardinals within eight (39-31). The Huskies doubled down to take the largest lead of the game at 18 and end the third quarter up, 53-37.
In the fourth, the Huskies shot 60 percent from the 3-point line and 58 percent from the field to take the game, 71-52.
