Starting XI: Constant, Shwartzman, Vargas, Carlson, Lopez, J.Perez, Aguilar, E.Perez, Velasco, Mendoza, Emena
HOUSTON - The University of the Incarnate Word men's soccer team took the short trip to local Texas rival, Houston Christin University (HCU) on Saturday evening but unfortunately fell to a 2-0 defeat.
It was an even start to the game with both teams battling for control. The early threats from the pace of the HCU attack were beginning to cause some problems as they looked to break on the counterattack using their speed.
UIW would have the first real chance of the half after some good interplay on the left side left
Cristian Mendoza with some space to shoot, narrowly missing with a terrific save to the near top corner from the HCU goalkeeper.
HCU managed to make the difference in the 16
th minute when Farkarlun dribbled down the left side finding Giwa-McNeil who fired a shot near post which Constant was unable to keep a hold of, making the score 1-0 to the Huskies.
The Cardinals began the second half with lots of possession but to very little prevail as the quality of chances on goal was unable to bring the equalizer. The more UIW pushed for the goal, the more they were exposed at the back. This left
Dylan Navarijo exposed for a challenge which would be a second yellow card, leading to a red and the Cardinals playing with 10 men in the final stage of the game.
HCU would have a flurry of chances late in the second half, but in the 90
th minute, they would get their reward breaking on the counterattack after UIW left numbers high up the field for the equalizer. Farkarlun would score the goal to bring the game to an end finishing 2-0 for the home side.
UIW will go on the road again in their next game to play College of Charleston in Charleston, SC with a 6 p.m. CT kickoff.
