Men’s Soccer Drops Contest at Gonzaga

Starting XI: Constant, Emena, Carlson, Vargas, Vohra, Velasco, Navarijo, Elizalde, Lopez, Aguilar, Dipoko

The University of the Incarnate Word men's soccer team returned to action last Thursday traveling to Spokane, Washington to face Gonzaga University. The Bulldogs won 2-0.

UIW started the match with a high press leading to a freekick on the edge of the box after a handball from the Gonzaga center-back. Bernabe Lopez was unable to convert it into a goal as his freekick was saved by the keeper and he was unable to finish the rebound.

It wasn't long before a corner from the right-hand side was headed in by Gonzaga's Angelo Calfo to make the score 1-0 in the fifth minute.

Victor Velasco had the two best chances for the Cardinals in the first half, appearing at the back post but was unable to finish past the Gonzaga goalkeeper.

Gonzaga came out strong in the second half and in the fiftieth minute, the Bull Dogs doubled their lead with a long-distance strike into the top corner from Demitrius Kigeya.

Sello Dipoko's goal was called offsides and Willy Aguilar came close in the seventy-fifth minute as his header narrowly missed the back post leaving the game 2-0 to Gonzaga University.

The Cardinals head to Tulsa, Oklahoma on Monday, Sept. 12 to face Oral Roberts University.
