Starting XI: Constant, Padilla, Enema, Vargas, Vohra, Zuniga, Navarijo, Elizalde, Perez, Lopez, Aguilar
SAN ANTONIO - After two weeks of preseason training, the University of the Incarnate Word men's soccer team opened its 2022 season with a tough game against No. 25 Campbell University. The Cardinals fell, 3-0, to the Fighting Camels.
The Cardinals started the game fast and furious with chances coming in the first three minutes of the game as multiple crosses missed the mark.
Jesse Padilla came close to putting UIW on top, but narrowly missed at the back post.
The following 20 minutes were back and forth with both teams fighting for control over the game until
Willy Aguilar broke through the back line, but his shot was saved by the keeper.
Campbell picked up the tempo for the rest of the first half, hitting the crossbar in the thirty-fifth minute after UIW made a goalkeeper change. As the tackles began flying in, both teams survived to half-time with the score tied at 0-0.
Campbell came out stronger in the second half, pushing UIW with its attacking pace. UIW stayed strong defensively until the fifty-fourth minute when Campbell broke the deadlock. Campbell added another goal in the fifty-fifth minute when Kemy Amiche dribbled from the right, cut in, and finished in the far bottom corner.
UIW kept fighting, but Campbell managed to find space beyond the backline to make it 3-0. UIW pushed until the end but was unable to find the back of the net as Campbell secured the win.
The Cardinals look to claim their first win on Saturday as they are back in action against Furman University at the Aveva Stadium in Houston.
