Men’s Soccer Loses Hard-Fought Battle in Houston

Starting Lineup: Constant, J.Perez, Emena, Vargas, Schwartzman, Velasco, Navarijo, Elizalde, E.Perez, Aguilar, Lopez

SAN ANTONIO - The University of the Incarnate Word men's soccer team fell 1-0 to Furman University in a hard-fought battle on Sunday afternoon.

With heavy rainfall during the day in Houston, it provided a difficult playing surface for both teams, leaving the first thirty minutes of the game evenly matched as both teams were trying to get a hold of the game.

UIW had their best chance of the half in the thirty-fifth minute as substitute Josiah Henderson broke down the left-hand side and after a deceiving step over, was unlucky to hit the near post.

Furman was quick to counter with a reply of their own when they broke down the left and drove into the box drawing a foul leading to the referee pointing to the spot which was converted by Furman's Tommy Redhead.

UIW had one more chance before the halftime whistle with a great outside-of-the-foot pass from Dylan Navarijo playing through Bernabe Lopez whose shot was saved near post by the Furman goalkeeper leaving the score line at the end of the half 1-0 to the Paladins.

UIW came out the second half, putting more pressure on their opponents defensively, and began to find some rhythm in their passing game as they looked to assert dominance in possession.

Victor Velasco and Edu Perez were particularly dangerous down the left-hand side, with Perez narrowly missing an opportunity after weaving through four of the Furman defenders. Constant pressure from UIW left Furman with no reply as they continued to dominate in the game.

In the last fifteen minutes of the game, the Cardinals pushed to get the equalizing goal but unfortunately to no prevail. Luis Zuniga came closest to an equalizer with eight minutes left hitting the near post, leaving the final score of the game 1-0 to Furman University.

The Cardinals look to bounce back next weekend when they travel to Ohio to play Evansville and St. Thomas in the Dayton Classic.
