SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word football team comes in at No. 16 on the 2022 Athlon Preseason Top 25 poll after a historic 2021 season. This is the first time in program history that the Cardinals have been ranked in the preseason polls.
 
The Cardinals are coming off the best season in program history, ending the 2021 year with a 10-3 overall mark while staying undefeated at Gayle and Tom Benson Stadium with a 6-0 home record. After winning the Southland Conference title, UIW hosted its first FCS Playoff game at Benson Stadium, where it defeated No. 20 Stephen F. Austin in a thrilling 35-28 overtime win.

This summer, UIW has been ranked in the preseason polls by Hero Sports (No. 12) and the FCS Coaches Poll (No. 13).
 
The Cardinals are back at Benson Stadium to open the 2022 season against Southern Illinois University at 6 p.m. CT on Saturday, Sept. 3.
