SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word softball team concluded its final home series of the season, defeating Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, 3-2, on Saturday afternoon at H-E-B Field. UIW honored
Ashley Trapp and
Teanna Lucio for their 2022 Senior Day.
Trapp threw a complete seven-inning game for UIW, recording a season high 129 pitches and striking out five.
Ryleigh Mata led the Cardinals with two RBIs.
The UIW defense started hot with a 1-2-3 inning that included Trapp's first strikeout of the day.
Savannah Behabetz sparked the Cardinal bats with a leadoff double in the bottom of the third inning.
Ryleigh Mata followed with a two-RBI single to right center as UIW took a 2-0 advantage.
The Islanders were quick to answer, knocking a solo home run to cut the lead to 2-1 in the top of the fourth inning.
Maddie Boldt stepped up to the plate in the bottom of the fifth inning and smacked a solo home run of her own over the center field wall to register her 10
th home run of the season and extend UIW's edge to 3-1.
The Islanders were able to plate one more run. Trapp threw back-to-back strikeouts, then the defense followed with a textbook throwdown play from right field to tag the Islander runner out at home. UIW secured the 3-2 victory to close out the regular season.
