Softball Splits the Day against HBU

SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word softball team split its doubleheader against Houston Baptist University (HBU) on Friday evening at H-E-B Field. The Cardinals dropped game one, 3-0, then rallied to take game two, 5-4, in walk-off fashion.

UIW 0, HBU 3
Madison Floyd pitched the full seven innings, striking out three Huskies.

Savannah Behabetz, Maddie Boldt, Maddison Guillen and Abby Frank all registered a hit in game one.

HBU jumped ahead to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning before tacking on another run in the top of the third to secure the 3-0 victory.

UIW 5, HBU 4
UIW rallied for game two. Ashley Trapp started in the circle for the Cardinals, throwing four innings and striking out three HBU batters before Annie Gunther entered to finish the game and tallied two strikeouts.

HBU got on the board first with a 2-0 lead at the end of the second inning, but the Cardinals did not give up. A big fourth inning gave UIW the edge as a pair of HBU errors tied the game at two apiece. With two runners on base, Aalyiah Garcia stepped up to the plate. She knocked a double to center field to clear the bases and give UIW a 4-2 lead.

The Huskies began to chip away at the advantage, adding a run in the top of the fifth inning (4-3) and then tying the game at 4-4 in the top of the sixth.

UIW held HBU scoreless in the top of the seventh. With Boldt on second base, Sanchez stepped up and battled at the plate. On a full 3-2 count, she smacked a walk-off double to give the Cardinals a 5-4 victory.
