Softball Splits Day Two Against McNeese State University

LAKE CHARLES, Louisiana – The University of the Incarnate Word softball team split day two against McNeese State University on Saturday, April 30, at Joe Miller Field at Cowgirl Diamond. UIW defeated the Cowgirls 7-6 in game one of the doubleheader but fell 8-0 to conclude the series.
 
UIW 7, McNeese 6
The Cardinals had a big seven-hit game consisting of seven RBIs and one home run to secure the 7-6 victory in game one of the doubleheader. Ryleigh Mata led UIW with two hits.
 
Madison Floyd started the game in the circle for the Cardinals, striking out two Cowgirls. Ashley Trap entered for Floyd before Annie Gunther came in to secure the save for UIW.
 
The Cardinals fell behind, 2-0, after the first inning before a big fourth inning. The explosive offense was started by a two-run home run from Bella Sanchez, her fourth of the season, to even the score.
 
Maddie Boldt registered an RBI single. Teanna Lucio followed suit with the bases loaded to bring in two runs, extending the UIW advantage to 5-2. Mata stepped up with two Cardinals on base and hit a perfectly placed ball to bring the edge to 6-2. UIW's seventh hit of the inning came from Savannah Behabetz's RBI single to center field for a 7-2 advantage.
 
The Cowgirls began to chip away at the Cardinal lead, but UIW secured the 7-6 victory.

Aaliyah Garcia started in the circle for the Cardinals, pitching two innings before Natalie Myers came in for UIW.
 
McNeese jumped ahead to an early 7-0 lead after the second inning and went on to secure the win.
 
UP NEXT
UIW is back home at H-E-B Field to host Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi for a three-game series beginning with a doubleheader at 4 p.m. CT and 6 p.m. on Friday, May 6. The series will conclude at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 7. Cardinal fans can purchase tickets on the UIW Ticket website.
