MCKINNEY, Texas –
Joe Buenfeld of the University of the Incarnate Word men's golf team shot even (par-72) in the final round of the Southland Conference Championship to claim the individual title on Wednesday at Stonebridge Ranch Country Club. With his first-place finish, Buenfeld punched his ticket to the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Regional.
"On and off the golf course, Joe is a guy you enjoy being around, and I am so proud of him," said head coach
Remy Huston Jr. "He has worked hard all year long, committing and trusting in our drills and process. He has made a habit of being in contention all spring long and was able to finish off strong."
Buenfeld is the second individual champion in UIW's Division I history after Ellen Nicholas won the Southland Conference Championship for the women's golf team on April 20, 2022. He shot a 216 through the three-day championship, a one-under-par 71 in the first round. Buenfeld never fell below third place throughout the championship and clinched his final position two shots above second place.
As a team, the Cardinals finished fifth at the SLC Championship.
Ken-Marten Soo tied for fifteenth with a 228 to contribute to the Cardinals' 914 three-round total.
