Women’s Basketball Closes out Historic Season

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team ended its historic run on Wednesday night, falling to Howard University, 55-51, in the opening game of the NCAA Tournament at Colonial Life Arena.

"This was a tremendous run," head coach Jeff Dow said.  "Of course, we would've liked to have won but to go on the run that we did, winning four games in four days, I'm really proud."

Moore opened the first possession of the game, draining a 3-pointer from the wing. The Cardinals and Bison were neck-and-neck throughout the first frame. Tiana Gardner sunk a pair of free throws to end the quarter with UIW on top, 19-17.

UIW held HU scoreless for the first five minutes of the second quarter. A spin move inside from Destiny Terrell gave the Cardinals a five-point lead midway through the frame. The Bison tied the game up, 26-26, but Moore slashed through the middle of the lane for a bucket just before the end of the half to maintain the lead (28-26).

A Moore trey over her defender kept UIW with a one-point lead (31-30) halfway through the third quarter. Howard stole the ball and finished a fastbreak layup with just over a minute to go to take a 35-33 advantage, but Moore nailed a jumper from the elbow to tie the game (35-35). Chloe Storer then heaved a deep three at the buzzer to lift the Cardinals to a 38-35 edge to start the fourth frame.

The Bison took a five-point lead (42-47) with five minutes to go in the game. Layups from Terrell and Gardner helped cut the lead to 47-46, but ultimately Howard won the game, 55-51.
