Football Set for Second Round Playoff Game against Furman

SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word football team is set to host Furman University on Saturday, Dec. 3, at 1 p.m. in the second round of the FCS playoffs.

  • The Cardinals are coming off a 66-7 win over Northwestern State to win back-to-back Southland Conference Championships.
  • The Cardinals received the No. 7 seed to earn a first-round bye.
  • The UIW defense is averaging 9.8 tackles for loss per game which is first in the nation.
  • Lindsey Scott Jr. was named the Southland Conference Player of the Year and has been named as a finalist for the Walter Payton Award.
  • Kelechi Anyalebechi was crowned the Defensive Player of the Year and is a finalist for the Buck Buchanan Award.
  • Taylor Grimes was invited to, and accepted, to play in the 2023 NFLPA Collegiate Bowl Game.
  • Scott, Grimes, Darion Chafin, Caleb Johnson, Reid Francis, Chris Whittaker, Steven Parker, Donte Thompson and Anyalebechi all received first-team honors.
  • Kaleb Culp, Marcus Cooper, Jimeto Obigbo and Nash Jones were named to the second team.
  • Head coach G.J. Kinne is a finalist for the Eddie Robinson Award as he tops the charts as a first-year head coach with the most wins (10-1).
 
SCOUTING THE PALADINS
 
  • Furman University was picked to finish fourth in the 2022 Southern Conference Preseason Poll and ended the season in second place.
  • The Paladins are 10-2 overall this season and finished 7-1 in conference play, coming off a 31-6 win over Elon in the first round of the FCS playoffs.
  • Safety Kam Brinson leads the FCS with four fumbles recovered this season.
  • Furman has a balanced offense averaging 217.2 rushing and 212.3 passing yards per game.

  • Marcus Cooper is averaging 94.9 rushing yards per game ranking second amongst Southland running backs.
  • The Cardinals have been consistently stopping their opponent before the line of scrimmage. Steven Parker has 10.5 tackles for loss (4th) and Chris Whittaker has 7.5 sacks (1st)
