Women’s Basketball Rings in the Season

SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team rings in the 2022-23 season against Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) on Monday, Nov. 7 at 5:30 p.m. Admission is free as the Cardinals will hold a ring ceremony before tip-off to present the 2022 Southland Conference Tournament rings. The team then travels to Waco as UIW faces off against Baylor University on Thursday, Nov. 10 at 7 p.m.
 
THE LAST TIME THEY MET
  • The Cardinals are 1-2 against the Saints. The two teams last saw each other on Dec. 15, 2014.
  • This will be the first time UIW competes against Baylor.
 
UIW
  • The Cardinals are coming off a record-breaking season after winning the Southland Conference Tournament and competing in the NCAA Women's Basketball First Four.
  • Destiny Terrell is the leading returner for the Cardinals. Last season, Terrell led the team in rebounds while finishing second on the team in assists and third in scoring. She had a dominating season-high 24 points and 19 rebounds against McNeese in the Southland Conference Tournament to help the Cardinals to a title.
  • UIW returns six student-athletes while welcoming six freshmen. Nina De Leon Negron, junior, joined the UIW squad from Austin Peay, while graduate student Yuliyana Valcheva moved across town from UTSA.
  • The Cardinals were picked to finish seventh in the 2022-23 Southland Women's Basketball Preseason Poll.
 
OLLU
  • The Saints are led by former UIW women's basketball assistant coach, Tanya Ray.
  • Last season, OLLU fell in the opening round of the NAIA National Championships as the No. 14 seed.
  • Already 2-0 on the season, the Saints picked up wins over North American University and Southwestern Assemblies of God University. Tiffany Lopez finished with a double-double in each game.
  • OLLU returns five student-athletes from the National Championship contending team.
 
BAYLOR
  • The Baylor Bears are ranked No. 18 as they head into their season opener against Lamar University on Monday, Nov. 7.
  • Senior transfer Aijha Blackwell was recognized as the Big 12's Newcomer of the Year and Darianna Littlepage-Buggs was named Freshman of the Year.
  • Baylor was picked to finish fourth in the Big 12 2022 Women's Basketball Preseason Poll.
 
UP NEXT
The Cardinals are back at the McDermott Center next week to face the University of Northern Colorado for a 6 p.m. tipoff on Thursday, Nov. 16, and Texas Lutheran University on Sunday, Nov. 20 at 2 p.m.
