NATCHITOCHES, La. – For the second season in a row, the University of the Incarnate Word football team was crowned Southland Conference Champions. The Cardinals defeated the Demons of Northwestern State University, 66-7, on Saturday afternoon to clinch a share of the Southland Conference title. UIW now awaits its draw during the NCAA FCS Playoff Selection Show on Sunday, Nov. 20, at 11:30 a.m. on ESPNU.
Multiple team and individual records were broken in the final regular season game.
Lindsey Scott Jr. finished with six touchdowns, five in the air and one on the ground.
Marcus Cooper rushed for two touchdowns and 267 yards to surpass 1,000 yards on the season.
Darion Chafin finished with three touchdowns off 143 yards.
The Demons wrapped up a five-minute starting drive with a touchdown to start the game, 7-0. UIW responded, scoring 66 unanswered points.
Cooper rushed 19 yards before Chafin bullied his way into the endzone to tie the game. With that touchdown, the 2022 Cardinals became the team with the most touchdowns responsible for in program history with 120.
Scott then found
Taylor Grimes deep left for a touchdown to end the first quarter up, 14-7, and surpass the team season record for most touchdowns in a season with 49.
In the second, Scott took it himself 18 yards to the house (21-7) before scooping the ball to
Jaelin Campbell for another Cardinal touchdown. This marked three passing touchdowns for Scott on the game, crowning him the new season passing touchdowns record holder with 48. UIW held the Demons scoreless in the second quarter and
Carson Mohr nailed a 31-yard field goal to end the half, 31-7.
Chafin leaked out for a touchdown off a 51-yard pass from Scott, then Cooper rushed down the middle for a 67-yard TD. Chafin scored once more and
Elliott Davison intercepted the Demons to end the third, 52-7.
Cooper opened up the fourth quarter with a 78-yard touchdown to put him over 1,000 rushing yards this season.
Jarrell Wiley came in to score another Cardinal touchdown as UIW took the game 66-7 to become Southland Conference Champions.
