Diphoko Goal too Late for Men’s Soccer Victory

Starting XI: Constant, Vargas, Lopez, Aguilar, Velasco, Drozdowski, Navarijo, Emena, Ashby, Carlson, Diphoko.

SAN JOSE, Ca. - On Saturday night San Jose State University hosted the University of the Incarnate Word men's soccer team, and after a hard-fought 90 minutes, UIW fell short 2-1 to an experienced San Jose team.

It was UIW who would start the game the strongest playing some fast and furious football in the first five minutes. UIW moved the ball around well, creating openings on the outside of the San Jose team but was unable to convert chances into goals.

San Jose moved the ball quickly as the game began to open up in the first half. It was San Jose who would break the deadlock with a pass out to the left to Scarafia who provided some clever play dribbling into the box and setting up Lomeli who finished his chance in the bottom corner to make the game 1-0.

San Jose remained dominant in the first half and managed to double their lead with only one minute remaining until the halftime break. Again, the ball was played down the left-hand side but this time the Spartans winger found his deep cross met by Leroux who was waiting back post to head the ball in for a 2-0 lead to the Spartans going in at the half.

In the second half, UIW came out fighting and had early chances with the UIW forwards being more creative but unable to convert to a goal.

In the 80th minute, Sello Diphoko produced a moment of magic as he chipped the keeper from 40 yards out after some excellent pressing from Bernabe Lopez left the ball to fall to Diphoko's feet who seized the opportunity.

The remaining 10 minutes of the game was like watching a different team as the confidence of the UIW attack began to thrive which led to some excellent interplay, particularly from Paco Segura, but this left UIW wanting, as they were unable to score in the last 10 minutes to get the deserved equalizer with the game finishing 2-1 to San Jose.

The Cardinals move on to play Georgia State University on Tuesday in Atlanta, GA.
