Men’s Soccer: One Minute Makes the Difference

Starting XI: Constant, Vargas, Lopez, Aguilar, Velasco, Navarijo, Ospina, Emena, Ashby, Carlson, Diphoko.

ATLANTA - The University of the Incarnate Word men's soccer team traveled to Atlanta, Georgia this week to face the Georgia State University Bulldogs. After a tough 90-minute battle, it was the Bulldogs who came out on top 3-1.

The first half was back and forth between both teams. UIW managed to get a few chances close to goal with some clever balls over the top leaving Ashby in some great positions but unable to transition to a chance on goal. Vargas also came close after a corner kick narrowly missed the far post after a great header from Vargas.

Georgia State also had its chances as their movement created spaces in the wide areas exposing the backline of the Cardinals. However, with the score of 0-0 halftime, and few chances for both teams meant the game was even going into the second half.

UIW conceded two quick goals, with the first in the 54th minute and the second goal 30 seconds later as the Bulldogs took advantage of some poor defending from the Cardinals.

UIW stayed in the game when in the 68th minute some great football on the left-hand side allowed Victor Velasco to break and cross to Ashby who finished at the front post to make the score 2-1.

There was a flurry of chances at the end for both teams as UIW pushed for the second goal, but the game was over after the Bulldogs broke on the counterattack and scored in the 72nd minute to bring the game to 3-1.

Among the up-and-down football in the last 10 minutes, a challenge on Velasco led to a team scuffle on the sideline which led the referee to produce a red card for Edu Perez as the game finished 3-1 to Georgia State.

The Cardinals travel to Santa Clara, CA to complete a difficult two weeks of travel and away games with a 7 p.m. kick-off scheduled.
