Starting XI: Constant, Vargas, Lopez, Aguilar, Velasco, Navarijo, Ospina, Emena, Ashby, Carlson, Diphoko.
SANTA CLARA, Ca – At the start of the match, the University of the Incarnate Word men's soccer team provided some good rhythm moving the ball trying to sustain possession in the early stages to win, 2-1.
The Cardinals began building chances from overloading wide areas, and it was a cross from
Victor Velasco that would find Paco Segura back post who finished on a half volley to take the lead, 1-0, after 27 minutes.
The Cardinals would take the confidence from the goal and continue to push for a second, but it would be the Broncos that would get the next goal in the 32
nd minute. Counter attacking down the left-hand side with the pace of Thomas, Constant came out and managed to make the chance difficult but the Santa Clara forward was able to finish it past the sliding UIW defenders.
UIW came out in the second half after having outperformed their opponents in the first half. It was Santa Clara though that would have the dominance of most of the second half as the next 30 minutes was more a chess game than a football game as both teams went back and forth trying to get the winning goal.
Victor Velasco would come to the Cardinals rescue in the 80
th minute after some outstanding defensive work from
Josiah Henderson allowed Aguilar to pick up the ball near the half way line and drive at the SCU backline. He found Ashby with a through ball who was unable to convert the chance, but the rebound fell straight to Velasco who was ready and waiting who slotted the ball in the goal to make the score 2-1 to the Cardinals.
In the last 10 minutes, the Cardinals managed to hold on, winning their first game of the season.
The Cardinals return next week in their second home game of the season against Utah Tech University. The game will honor the Alumni of the Men's Soccer program and will kick off at 7.30 p.m. at Benson Stadium.
