SAN ANTONIO - In the first home game for nearly three weeks, the University of the Incarnate Word men's soccer team won in front of their home fans 2-0 against Utah Tech on a night celebrating the UIW Alumni.
UIW started the game strong, gaining possession early and trying to move the ball with high speed from side to side. Utah Tech had a few early chances in the opening stages of the game as they tried to imprint their aggressive style, but Constant and the UIW backline kept the score level 0-0 going into halftime.
The Cardinals made a halftime substitute bringing on Edu Perez. The substitute made all the difference as Perez regained possession and after playing a one: two with Paco Segura he was left one vs. one with the goalkeeper, placing it into the goal and making the score 1-0.
The Trailblazers still looked dangerous on the counterattacks, breaking fast into wide areas, but it was Constant and Vargas at the heart of the defense pushing for the first clean sheet of the season.
Utah had a couple of chances later on in the game, but it was UIW who would counter in the final minutes, breaking down the right side, and after some trickery from Perez he found Ashby waiting at the back-post box to tap in the second goal.
This is the second consecutive win for the Cardinals as they look to make a strong end to what was a disappointing start to the season. UIW travels on the road to play UTRGV this Wednesday with a 6.30 pm kick-off in Edinburg, TX.
