SAN ANTONIO- The Cardinals were on a two-game win streak following their shutout against Utah Tech, but it was the Vaqueros who would win the local Texas derby.  
 
UIW struggled to gain control over the ball in the opening 20 minutes as UTRGV applied pressure during their strong possession game. The Vaqueros created movements from wide areas that ultimately caused issues for the Cardinals backline during the entire first half. 
 
UTRGV capitalized on the 30th minute with a mix of corners, shots and chances to take the lead in the 42nd minute. A breakdown in the wide area left UIW defense struggling to make up the space. Michael Washington, who would control the ball in the box, gave UTRGV the lead going into halftime 1-0.  
 
In the second half The Cardinals went more attacking with a change in formation allowing more pressure higher up the field. The increase in pressure worked as UIW had multiple chances to create something in their final third but was unable to convert their chances to an equalizer.  

Another counterattack from UTRGV in the 81st minute would finish the game off as the Vaqueros ran past the UIW defense and finished into the far corner, making the final score 2-0.  
UIW will return for their final home game of the season against Houston Christian University this coming Sunday (Oct. 30) at Benson Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7pm as we will be honoring our Seniors before the game.
