Cross Country Brings Home Gold at Southland Conference Championships

Thibodaux, La – The University of the Incarnate Word men's cross country team was crowned the 2022 Southland Conference Men's Cross Country Champions at Nicholls Farm on Friday morning. Freshman Joy Gill took first place to carry the women's team to a third-place finish.
 
Following her performance, Gill was named Southland Cross Country Female Athlete of the Year, and Freshman of the Year to secure a spot on the Southland All-Conference first team. Gill is the first runner to win as a freshman since 2014, finishing the 6K with a time of 20:24.59.
 
Griffin Neal paced the men's team with a fifth-place finish. Christopher Daniels followed behind in seventh place while Alexandre Fetizon, Ryan Garza, and Jett Montes rounded out UIW's 62 points to secure the championship. Neal (first team) and Daniels (second team) received all-conference honors.
 
On top of the student-athletes bringing home some hardware, head coach Derek Riedel was named the Southland Cross Country Men's Coach of the Year.
 
The season isn't finished for UIW cross country, up next the Cardinals travel to College Station for the NCAA South Central Regional Championship.
