Football Returns to Southland Conference Play

SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word football team travels to Texas A&M -Commerce for another Southland Conference game against the Lions on Oct. 29 at 2 pm. This matchup features the top two scoring offenses and the top two scoring defenses in the conference going head-to-head.

  • UIW is ranked No. 8 in the Stats Perform FCS Poll. and No. 9 in the AFCA Coaches Poll.
  • The Cardinal defense leads the nation in tackles for loss averaging 10.1 per game.
  • Offense has put up the most points in the nation this season, with 408, averaging 51 points per game. UIW leads the Southland in total offense with 4,581 yards this season and leads the FCS in passing touchdowns with 39.
SCOUTING THE COLONELS
 
  • Commerce was picked to finish sixth in the 2022 Southland Conference Preseason Poll.
  • The Lions have started the season 5-2 overall and 3-0 in conference play, coming off a 31-3 win over Houston Christian University last Saturday. TAMUC is one of two teams undefeated in the conference.
  • Wide Receiver Andrew Armstrong leads the Southland with 12 touchdown receptions this year.
  • Texas A&M Commerce is first in the Southland with eight interceptions.
 
 
THE LAST TIME THEY MET
 
  • The Cardinals are 3-0 all-time against Texas A&M – Commerce.
  • UIW won the last matchup, in 2012, by a score of 31-9.
  • This will be the first time the Lions compete against UIW as a Division I program.
 
UIW PLAYERS TO WATCH
 
  • Lindsey Scott Jr. continues to lead the nation in passing touchdowns (37), efficiency (220.56), yards per attempt (11.56), as well as points responsible all season (258) and per game (32.2).
  • Kole Wilson was named the Southland Conference Special Teams Player of the Week after a record-breaking 179 punt return yards for two touchdowns. Wilson now leads the conference in punt return yards.
  • Chris Whittaker leads the Southland with 7.5 total sacks through eight games.
