SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team fell to the Islanders of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 58-53, on Tuesday night at the McDermott Center.
The Cardinal offense was led by
Jaaucklyn Moore's 15-point performance, while
Destiny Terrell followed with 10 points for UIW.
In this back-and-forth matchup between the Cardinals and the Islanders, UIW took the lead early in the game.
Destiny Jenkins knocked down back-to-back 3-pointers to give the Cardinals a 17-12 advantage mid-way through the first quarter. The Islander's offense fought back to tie the game heading into the second quarter and eventually took the lead.
Jamie Means heated up, draining two from the charity line to bring the Cardinals within two points (23-21). After being heavily defended in the first quarter, Moore used a strong drive to the basket to end the first half. The Cardinals trailed, 32-26, heading into the break.
UIW came out strong from the locker room with a three from Moore followed by a tough drive to the basket by
Myra Bell to bring the Cardinals within one point (36-35).
Starr Omozee contributed on both ends of the court, registering a block on the Islander offense and transitioning downcourt to add two more points for the Cardinals. UIW trailed, 45-39, heading into the final 10 minutes of the game. Terrel battled through the Islander defense, securing the and-one opportunity. The back-and-forth intensity continued through the final minutes, but the Islanders secured the victory, 58-53.

UIW travels to Corpus Christi, Texas, to face TAMUCC again on Saturday, Jan. 15, at 1 p.m. CT. This game will officially begin Southland Conference play.
