SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word football team is set to open the Fall 2021 season against Youngstown State in an ESPN+ streamed game Thursday at 6 p.m. (CT).

UIW LAST SEASON

• The COVID-shortened 2021 spring season marked year three for UIW head coach Eric Morris. Morris had 11 wins under his belt in his first two seasons, which was the best UIW stretch in its 11-year history. 
• Cameron Ward recorded seven touchdowns against Southeastern Louisiana on March 20 to break two school records over a three-game stretch. The two records were broken when Ward tallied 407 yards with no interceptions to lead the Cardinals to a 56-45 home-opening upset over the No. 16/17-ranked Lions.

• Ward set a new school record with 24 touchdown passes in a single season, which he did through just six games. Ward also broke the record for best pass efficiency in a single season at 146.5 and tied the school record in touchdowns responsible for at 26. 
• Kevin Brown scored a season-high three touchdowns against Northwestern State on April 10 to tie for the second-best performance in UIW history (alongside Keyondrick Philio against Abilene Christian on September 27, 2019). 
• Brown, Robert Ferrel and Carson Mohr each finished with impressive season accolades for the Cardinals. Brown finished third in rushing yards in a single season with 775, Ferrel's six touchdowns tied for third most in a season, and Mohr went 30-31 in extra points for the best PAT kick percentage in a single season at UIW.  

YOUNGSTOWN ST. LAST SEASON

• Youngstown St. went 1-6 overall for the 2020 season, with a 1-2 record at home. 
• The Penguins completed 267.1 total yard and rushed for 166.7 yards over the entire season. 
• In their 28-10 win over South Dakota, YSU passed for 84 yards and rushed for 303 yards. 
• This is the first meeting between Youngstown St. and UIW.
