Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 | Box Score 4 SAN ANTONIO - University of the Incarnate Word Athletics rounds out the month of August with a busy week of competition from soccer and volleyball. 
 
MEN'S SOCCER
  • Traveled to Houston, Texas to compete in the HBU Tournament. 
  • The Cardinals fell 1-0 to the Owls of Florida Atlantic on Thursday, August 26.
  • The HBU tournament concluded on Sunday, August 29 with a Cardinal victory against St. Thomas of Minnesota.
  • Two second half goals from Victor Velasco and Wilmar "Willy" Aguilar led the Cardinals to a 2-1 victory Sunday evening. 
  • Velasco's goal tied the game 1-1 in the 80th minute of the match. "Being down 1-0 at the half we knew that we were in tough circumstances," said Velasco. "We came out and played it through and came out with a win."
  • Aguilar's goal gave the Cardinals the lead, 2-1, in the 82nd minute of the match. This was his first goal of the season.
  • "It was a tough game, but I am happy that the team won and that I was able to contribute to the team with a goal," said Aguilar.
  • Head coach Kiki Lara reflects on the final game of the first tournament of the 2021 season. "Very rare to see a two-goal come back under 15 minutes. That is a very strong quality this team is capable of. It was great to see."
WOMEN'S SOCCER
  • Hosted Grand Canyon University on Friday, August 27 at 7 p.m. at Gayle and Tom Benson Stadium. The Cardinals fell 1-0 to the Lopes Friday evening. 
  • Payton Adams was named Player of the Match by Head Coach Emma Wright-Cates. 
  • "I really think our chemistry is coming along. It takes time to get a strong team and I think we're moving along at a good pace. I have really high hopes for us," Adams said. 
  • For the second match of the weekend, the Cardinals hosted California Baptist University on Sunday, August 29 at 1 p.m.
  • The Lancers defeated the Cardinals 1-0.
  • "The energy and the urgency. Everybody came together and really fought hard for each other," Wright-Cates said when asked what was the biggest positive take away from the game. 
  • Senior Madison McComasky was named Player of the Match.
